Viktor Hovland captured his eighth PGA Tour title Monday, defeating world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in a playoff at the Travelers Championship after both players finished 21 under par at TPC River Highlands. The Norwegian drained a seven-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole while Scheffler shockingly missed a three-foot attempt, ending a tense duel that saw Hovland miss a 25-footer for victory Sunday.

Scheffler had kept hopes alive with a clutch nine-foot par save at the 18th hole Sunday, forcing the playoff that was delayed until Monday afternoon due to insufficient daylight. Both players delivered excellent approaches on the playoff hole, leaving makeable birdie putts that ultimately decided the tournament in Hovland's favor.

The victory marked Hovland's first win since the Valspar Championship in March 2025 and was witnessed by his mother Galina for the first time live. Scheffler, who secured his 20th PGA Tour title earlier this year at The American Express, will look to bounce back at the Open Championship where he aims to defend his 2025 crown at Royal Birkdale.

Hovland's triumph demonstrates his clutch putting ability under pressure, while Scheffler's near-miss highlights how quickly fortunes can change in sudden-death scenarios despite both players executing quality shots when it mattered most.
