Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns have matched the lowest round in men's major history with exceptional second-round 62s at The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale. This achievement follows Haeran Ryu's record 60 at the Amundi Evian Championship just days prior.

Herbert started strong, birdying four of his first five holes and reaching the turn in 28, equaling the lowest front nine in a men's major. He added more birdies on the back nine but narrowly missed opportunities for a solo record, finishing with a bogey on the 18th. Herbert expressed his excitement and slight disappointment, noting the energy of the crowd.

Burns, playing later, also carded an eight-under 62. He birdied three holes in succession on his back nine and finished with a flourish, holing out from a greenside bunker on the 18th for his ninth birdie of the round. Burns admitted he was surprised by his performance, calling his finish a "bonus."

These 62s are the latest in a series of record-low rounds in men's majors, with Branden Grace first achieving it in 2017. Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele (twice), and Shane Lowry have also recorded 62s in recent years.
