Lucas Herbert posted an 8‑under 62 in the second round of the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale on Friday, becoming the sixth man to record that score in a major. He missed a 5‑foot par putt on the 18th, while Sam Burns capped an astonishing birdie‑birdie‑birdie finish to match the record with his political 62. Herbert’s round saw 6‑under 28 at the turn, matching the record for the lowest nine‑hole score at The Open, and 8‑under after the back nine. He had a 2‑stroke lead over Jackson Suber, who carded a 1‑under 69. Five other golfers have recorded a 62 in a major, most recently Xander Schauffele and Shane Lowry in the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club, and Branden Grace at Royal Birkdale in 2017. Herbert, a member of the LIV Golf League’s all‑Australian Ripper GC team, also won the 2021 Butterfield Bermuda Championship and had three wins on the DP World Tour before joining LIV.

Herbert’s impressive round came in fast, dry conditions with no wind, and he managed to avoid the native areas that plagued his 17th approach. The Australian’s 62 places him among a select group of players who have achieved the lowest score in a major championship.
