Ryan Fox matched the major championship scoring record with an 8-under 62 in the third round at Royal Birkdale, becoming the eighth golfer to achieve the feat. It was the third 62 in two days after Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns posted the score Friday in benign conditions.

Fox, a 19-time winner worldwide and two-time PGA Tour winner, started at even par and joined Herbert as co-leader at 8 under. The 39-year-old New Zealander birdied four of his first six holes, made the turn at 5-under 29, and rebounded from a lone bogey at No. 13 with back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17. He had a 47½-foot putt for 61 on the 18th but settled for par.

"You'd take a 62 anywhere," said Xander Schauffele, who shot 66 playing with Fox. Previous major 62s include Branden Grace at the 2017 Open at Birkdale, and Shane Lowry and Schauffele at the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.
