Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns equalled the lowest round in men's major history with 62s in the second round of The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale. Six days after Haeran Ryu's 60 at the Evian Championship, both players entered the record books.

Herbert birdied four of his first five holes, reached the turn in 28 to match the lowest front nine in a men's major, and stood at nine under through 16. He missed a 10-foot birdie at the par-five 17th and bogeyed the last after missing from inside five feet, denying him a solo 59.

Burns, two groups behind, turned in 32, birdied the 16th and 17th, then holed a greenside bunker shot at the par-four 18th for his 62. The pair join Branden Grace (2017), Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele (twice), and Shane Lowry as the only men to post 62 in a major.

Sky Sports continues exclusive UK coverage with third-round action from 9am Saturday and final round from 8am Sunday on Sky Sports Golf.
