World No 3 Cameron Young surged into a share of the lead at the Rocket Classic with a nine-under 61 in the second round in Detroit. The 29-year-old climbed 68 spots to reach 10 under par, joining Patrick Cantlay and Patrick Fishburn in a three-way tie at the top. Young made seven birdies on his front nine and nearly became just the second player after Jim Furyk to record two career sub-60 rounds. "It felt like I had a 10-footer for birdie on pretty much every hole," Young said.

He credited his strong putting performance despite some cooling off on the back nine. Heading into the weekend, Young will look to maintain his momentum following his runner-up finish at The Open two weeks ago. England's Matt Wallace remains one shot behind after a bogey-free 64, while Rickie Fowler sits at nine under.

First-round leader Peter Malnati fell back with a 71 but remains within two shots of the lead. A total of 17 players remain within three shots of the lead as the tournament enters its weekend stages.
