Arsenal's opening bid for Bruno Guimaraes has been rejected by Newcastle, who remain determined to keep their captain.

The 28-year-old midfielder, who told Newcastle last month he wants to join Arsenal, is currently in Spain to report for the club's pre-season training camp in La Manga.

Newcastle want Guimaraes to stay, with the Brazil international having two years left on his contract plus a club-held option for a third.

Arsenal are now discussing internally whether to submit an improved offer. Guimaraes joined Newcastle from Lyon for £40m in 2022 and has made 195 appearances, scoring 31 goals.

Last week, Guimaraes praised former head coach Eddie Howe, calling him the "king of this club" after his resignation from St James' Park.
