England legend Andrew Flintoff has been named head coach of Sydney Thunder for the upcoming BBL season. Flintoff replaces Trevor Bayliss, who departed after five years and a pair of last‑place finishes. The move comes as Thunder look to reverse a streak of poor results and rebuild a competitive squad for Australia's league competition today.

Flintoff brings experience from coaching the England Lions tour of Australia and two seasons with the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. He will keep his Lions duties while overseeing Thunder, whose roster features former Test stars Sam Konstas, David Warner, Cameron Bancroft, wicket‑keeper Sam Billings and white‑ball ace Tanveer Sangha for the team this season.

Flintoff expressed excitement, saying he sees “something really big” to build with a mix of veterans and young talent. He wants players to play with passion and leave everything on the field, while fostering a culture that makes the team the best part of the year for supporters of the season in Sydney in 2024.

Trent Copeland hailed the appointment as a historic moment for Thunder and the BBL, noting Flintoff’s global reputation and modern leadership style. Copeland said the goal is a step‑change toward a lasting culture of success, positioning Thunder to compete for titles in the coming seasons of Australia league.
