Alonso eyes F1 future beyond 2026 despite Aston Martin woes

Fernando Alonso signaled he still wants to race beyond the end of the 2026 season. Speaking at Monaco’s Historic Grand Prix, the 44‑year‑old said he feels competitive, motivated and happy behind the wheel, adding that retirement “would be a very hard decision.” His current deal with Aston Martin expires after this year, and he noted a more competitive car would make leaving easier.

Alonso’s hopes arrive as the team endures a disastrous start to the new regulation era. Despite hiring designer Adrian Newey and securing Honda’s works engines, Aston Martin has failed to score a point in the three rounds, with the Spaniard’s 18th place in Japan the only finish of a Grand Prix for either car. The lack of results has drawn criticism from fans and pundits.

With the contract deadline looming, the lack of alternatives for a 2027 lead driver puts pressure on the outfit to retain its veteran. Alonso’s emotional attachment—he’s been behind a wheel since age three—means a poor season alone may not push him out. Consequently, 2026 could become his final championship campaign if performance does not improve.
