Adams Calls for Signature USMNT World Cup Win After Winless Stretch

Tyler Adams says the United States needs a signature win at this summer's World Cup, admitting it's been too long since the Americans "knocked off a big boy." The U.S. has lost eight consecutive games against European opponents, including March friendly defeats to Belgium and Portugal that Adams missed while nursing injuries.

In Group D, Mauricio Pochettino's side will face Paraguay, Australia and Türkiye beginning June 12. The U.S. is ranked 16th in the world and sits as a 40-1 long shot to win the tournament. Adams' goal is to "go as far as any team has before," matching the 2002 quarterfinal run. Pochettino will announce his roster May 26, with pre-tournament friendlies against Senegal and Germany.

The 27-year-old captain has struggled with fitness, making just three league appearances this season after undergoing back surgery and recovering from a left MCL tear in December. Despite 52 caps and playing every minute at the 2022 World Cup, Adams insists no player is guaranteed a spot. "We need to continue to try and find a way to navigate playing against big teams," he said.
