World Cup Fans Take FIFA to European Commission Over Ticket Prices

Soccer fans have formally complained to the European Commission about FIFA's World Cup ticket prices, alleging monopolistic practices and excessive costs. Football Supporters Europe (FSE) joined Euroconsumers in filing the complaint, citing FIFA's imposition of prices ranging from $140 for group games to $8,680 for the final. FSE labeled this a 'monumental betrayal,' arguing FIFA's monopoly allows it to set conditions fans 'would never accept in a competitive market.' FIFA initially faced backlash in December when prices were announced, leading to some reductions to $60 per match for team allocations.

However, FSE contends these cuts are minimal and that dynamic pricing, used for the first time at the US/Canada/Mexico-hosted tournament, unfairly inflates costs and excludes fans. The complaint specifically targets FIFA's resale platform, which lists tickets well above face value and takes a 30% cut from sales. FIFA, yet to formally receive the complaint, maintains its not-for-profit status and reinvestment of World Cup revenue. FSE demands price freezes during April sales and an end to dynamic pricing for European fans, arguing it turns loyalty into a bidding war and locks out supporters.
