VAR's Double Standard in Premier League

Mikel Arteta embodies football's hypocrisy toward VAR. The Arsenal manager raged against video review when a penalty decision against his team was overturned in the Champions League against Atlético Madrid, yet celebrated when VAR disallowed a West Ham goal that would have jeopardized his team's title chances. His contradictory stance reveals the sport's love-hate relationship with technology.

The David Raya incident perfectly illustrates VAR's value. After initially allowing Callum Wilson's late goal for West Ham, referee Chris Kavanagh overturned it following a 4:11 VAR review that showed Pablo fouled the Arsenal goalkeeper. While Arteta praised officials for making "a big call in very difficult circumstances," West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen disagreed, calling it "not the right decision."

Despite criticism, VAR exists to eliminate game-changing errors like Maradona's "Hand of God" or Thierry Henry's handball. The system gets decisions right when officials apply the letter of the law, even if inconsistent human judgment creates occasional mistakes. When technology prevents wrongful outcomes that could alter season trajectories, it fulfills its purpose.
