Cardinals' Beck out with rib injury, derails Mendoza rematch

Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck won't play in Thursday night's preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders due to a rib injury sustained in last Thursday's Hall of Fame Game, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The injury is not considered serious, and Beck practiced through soreness all week, but the team decided to keep him out as a precaution to allow more time to heal.

Beck's absence derails a rematch against Raiders rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 draft. The two dueled in last season's College Football Playoff National Championship, a seesaw game won by Mendoza's Indiana Hoosiers over Beck's Miami Hurricanes.

Beck was clean, efficient, and took what the defense gave him in his preseason debut, a 33-30 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The third-round pick completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, posting a quarterback rating of 125.4. Jacoby Brissett will start for the Cardinals while Kirk Cousins starts for the Raiders.
