Thiaw calls on US diaspora to fuel Senegal amid visa bans

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw urged the diaspora in New York and United States to back the team after U.S. visa restrictions halted most home supporters from traveling to Qatar. Facing France in their opening match, the Teranga Lions will rely on expatriate fans to generate the vocal pressure they normally receive from organised groups like the Gaindé, to create an atmosphere comparable to home stadiums.

Thiaw stressed that Senegalese patriotism runs deep in North America, citing nearly 20,000 residents in Manhattan’s ‘Little Senegal’ enclave and sizable communities in Chicago and Montreal. He believes their chants and flags can compensate for the absent crowds, especially in a tightly contested game where early momentum could shape Group I standings. Their presence could also sway neutral spectators and boost TV ratings for the match.

The Lions aim to start the tournament with a win, knowing a positive result boosts confidence and improves their chance to advance. After France, Senegal stays in New York for the Norway clash on Monday before closing Group I in Toronto, where Canadian visa rules should allow more African fans to attend. A victory would also reinforce Thiaw’s tactical plans centered on swift counter‑attacks.
