Texas Joins Multi-State FIFA World Cup Ticket Pricing Investigation

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Tuesday his office is investigating FIFA's World Cup ticket sale practices after fans complained they were misled about seat locations for matches in Dallas and Houston. One fan purchased 'Category 1' seats expecting premium field views, only to find FIFA reclassified them as 'Category 2' in a lower tier zone.

Paxton stated the investigation centers on potential violations of Texas consumer protection laws. He emphasized that FIFA must engage in 'ethical and honest business practices' so Texas fans receive fair treatment. Similar probes are already active in California and New York, with state attorneys general seeking transparency about how FIFA marketed and assigned seating categories.

This marks the first World Cup where FIFA implemented dynamic pricing, adjusting costs based on demand. Fan complaints have dominated coverage, with one organization calling it 'a monumental betrayal of the tradition of the World Cup' in December. The pricing strategy represents a significant departure from previous tournaments.

State prosecutors revealed that ticket prices for the three main categories rose an average of 34% between October and April. Final match tickets at MetLife Stadium carry an average price tag of $11,790, according to SeatPick.com. These investigations could reshape how future World Cup tickets are marketed and sold across American venues.
