Sancho departs United as free agent after €85m flop

Manchester United confirmed on Wednesday that winger Jadon Sancho will leave the club as a free agent at the end of June. The 26‑year‑old arrived from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021 for €85 million and was signed alongside Raphaël Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo. In 83 appearances he managed 12 goals and six assists, far below expectations. His lack of consistency contributed to United’s struggles.

Sancho spent the latter half of the 2023‑24 season back on loan at Dortmund, featuring in a Champions League final loss to Real Madrid. Subsequent loans to Chelsea and Aston Villa yielded European silverware – the Conference League and Europa League – but neither club pursued a permanent deal, with Chelsea reportedly balking at his wage demands, and cemented his reputation as a versatile attacker.

United’s summer exit list now includes Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and three academy products, underscoring a broader squad overhaul. Sancho’s departure frees up a substantial wage bill and may signal a return to Dortmund, where sporting director Lars Ricken has hinted at a possible re‑signing. The winger’s exit leaves United without a clear replacement for pace on the flank.
