Real Madrid seek Mourinho amid presidential race

Real Madrid face a quiet but critical crossroads after two seasons without silverware. President Florentino Pérez said the club only needs a good coach to return to glory, naming former manager José Mourinho as a fit. Three recent appointments—Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso, and Álvaro Arbeloa—failed to spark success for the past three years in the league.

Pérez highlighted the squad’s talent, citing stars like Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Bellingham, Güler, Valverde and Tchouameni as the best worldwide. He warned that a competent coach can unlock their potential and usher in a new epoch. The 2026–27 season will test the club’s strategic direction under looming elections before the June 7 vote and beyond.

Meanwhile, rival Enrique Riquelme promised to name a coach and new signings post‑election, citing Manchester City midfielder Rodri as the ideal profile. He also eyed the future of Vinícius Júnior, whose 2027 contract expires. Pérez dismissed Riquelme’s board proposals, labeling them a return to the club’s darkest era and its legacy for the next decade.

The presidential contest, first since 2006, will decide the club’s leadership on June 7. Pérez insists he will not debate Riquelme publicly, stating that any discussion will come through his statements. With the squad’s talent intact, the outcome hinges on securing a coach who can translate potential into trophies for the upcoming campaign and beyond.
