Neuer's Shock World Cup Recall

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has sparked controversy by recalling 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer out of retirement for the 2026 World Cup. Neuer, who retired after Euro 2024, has been included in the 26-man squad despite Oliver Baumann being assured he was the No. 1 goalkeeper until recent reports emerged about Neuer's potential comeback.

The decision casts doubt on Baumann's position despite his 500 Bundesliga appearances and commitment to Germany's success. Neuer brings 124 caps to the squad compared to Baumann's 11, while Barcelona's Marc-André ter Stegen has been sidelined by injuries. Neuer's recent form for Bayern Munich, particularly against Real Madrid, convinced Nagelsmann to reconsider.

However, recurring injuries pose a significant concern. Neuer recently left Bayern's last Bundesliga match with muscular problems in his left calf and his availability for the German Cup final remains uncertain. Germany faces Ivory Coast, Ecuador, and newcomer Curacao in Group E at the tournament, with preparations starting on May 27.
