NJ/NY Gotham FC, the reigning NWSL champions, will relocate their home games to the new Etihad Park in Queens, New York, beginning in 2028. This move marks the first time the club will play within New York City limits, a significant step for the franchise and the league. The 25,000-seat stadium, currently under construction for MLS' New York City FC and set to open in spring 2027, offers world-class infrastructure and amenities. Gotham FC's initial lease is for five years with options to extend up to 15 years, providing a long-term home.

This transition represents substantial progress for the NWSL, allowing teams to play in prime locations with top-tier facilities. NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman highlighted the importance of this move for fan experience and league growth, stating that "world-class athletes deserve world-class environments." Gotham FC will benefit from dedicated locker room space and the ability to customize stadium branding on matchdays through digital signage. The club will continue playing at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, through 2027 before making the move across the river.

The new venue's location near Citi Field offers excellent public transportation access via subway and the Long Island Railroad, making it more accessible for New York City and Long Island fans. This move is expected to boost attendance and commercial opportunities for the league, especially as it enters its next media rights cycle. The club has already seen immense interest, with nearly 38,000 tickets sold for an upcoming match at Citi Field, a record for a women's professional sporting event in New York City. This event is viewed as a proof of concept for generating significant fan engagement within the city.
