Sam Kerr made her official return to Gotham FC after nearly a decade, helping the team defeat the Washington Spirit 1-0 on a goal from Rose Lavelle in front of an announced 42,175 fans at Citi Field. The sellout crowd marked the second-largest in NWSL history and a new attendance record for a women's sports event in New York City. Kerr, who won the 2017 NWSL MVP with the club when it was Sky Blue FC, returned on a free transfer this summer after six years at Chelsea, signing through 2030.

Kerr entered in the second half and immediately forced a save from Spirit goalkeeper Sandy Mac Iver. Two minutes later, Lavelle's pass found Kerr behind the defense, drawing the keeper before Lavelle scored the winner — mirroring her game-winning goal in last year's NWSL Championship. "Sam's just a world-class player," Lavelle said. "It was fun to link up with her."

The match at Citi Field — Gotham's first within NYC limits — was moved from Sports Illustrated Stadium due to the 2026 Men's World Cup final. Poor air quality from Canadian wildfires and extreme heat (99°F, heat index 104°F) forced four hydration breaks, two per half, under the NWSL's updated extreme heat policy. AQI hovered between 150-170. Spirit forward Trinity Rodman criticized the frequent breaks: "If we have to have a hydration break every 15 minutes, then we shouldn't be playing the game."

NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman praised Gotham control owner Carolyn Tisch Blodgett for the Citi Field initiative. Gotham coach Juan Carlos Amoros called the breaks "necessary" for player protection, while Spirit coach Adrian Gonzalez noted they disrupted game flow.
