France drops Camavinga, Chevalier from 2026 World Cup squad

Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga and PSG keeper Lucas Chevalier have been omitted from Didier Deschamps’ 26‑man France roster for the 2026 World Cup. Camavinga, who featured off the bench in the 2022 final loss, was left out despite his role in the previous tournament. Chevalier lost his PSG starting spot to Matvei Safonov and hasn’t featured since January.

Deschamps justified the cuts by citing recent form, rewarding Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser after a breakout season that earned him Ligue 1’s best‑keeper award. Risser joins Mike Maignan and Brice Samba as the third choice. France sits in Group I with Senegal, Iraq and Norway, and still boasts an attacking line‑up featuring Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and rising talent Désiré Doué.

With veteran defender Lucas Digne and midfield dynamo N'Golo Kanté anchoring the squad, Deschamps enters his last World Cup after steering France to the 2018 title and a 2022 final. The omission of Kolo Muani and the surprise inclusion of Crystal Palace’s Jean‑Philippe Mateta signal a tilt toward in‑form attackers. France now relies on a blend of experience and youthful flair to chase a third crown.
