FIFA Fines Israel FA Over Racism Amid Settlement Club Dispute

FIFA has cleared Israeli settlement clubs to continue playing in the national league while fining the Israel Football Association 150,000 Swiss francs ($190,000) for discrimination and racist abuse. The ruling came after Palestinian soccer officials filed formal complaints in 2024 about Israeli teams from West Bank settlements participating in domestic competitions.

FIFA acknowledged the geopolitical complexity of the West Bank's legal status, stating it cannot resolve international conflicts through soccer governance. The disciplinary charges focused on violations of fair play principles and offensive behavior by Israeli teams and fans. FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasized football's role in promoting peace while presenting President Trump with a specially created peace prize at the World Cup draw.

The Israel Football Association must spend one-third of the fine on implementing anti-discrimination measures, including stadium protocols, educational campaigns, and monitoring systems for an entire season. FIFA judges emphasized that football must remain a platform for peace and mutual respect despite the broader human context of ongoing conflicts in the region.
