Ireland to Play Israel Despite Uefa Ban Calls

The Football Association of Ireland has confirmed the Republic of Ireland will fulfill their Nations League fixtures against Israel despite previously calling for Uefa to ban the Israeli team from European competitions. The decision comes after consultations with Uefa about potential disqualification if matches are not played. Ireland were drawn against Israel, Austria, and Kosovo in League B3.

In November, the FAI overwhelmingly approved a motion requesting Uefa suspend Israel from competitions for violating two provisions of Uefa statutes. These violations included organizing clubs in illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank without Palestinian consent and failing to implement an effective anti-racism policy. The FAI acknowledged that Uefa regulations state refusing to play a match results in forfeiture and possible disqualification from the competition.

Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson stated it's not his responsibility to handle political implications, focusing instead on football. The fixtures are scheduled for September and November, with the competition opening with a quadruple header from September 23 to October 4. This situation mirrors a similar controversy in basketball, where Basketball Ireland initially considered withdrawing from EuroBasket qualifiers with Israel but ultimately decided to play at neutral venues after threats of sanctions.
