FAI Warns Boycott of Israel Games Risks Millions, Lasting Harm

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has warned that boycotting upcoming Nations League matches against Israel would inflict "significant and lasting harm" on Irish football. The governing body estimates a potential financial loss of 10.3 million euros (£9m). Despite internal dissent and external pressure from campaigns like 'Irish Sport for Palestine', the FAI confirmed it would fulfill the fixtures.

An Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on July 8th will address member opposition, though its outcome is non-binding. The FAI board argues that non-fulfillment would trigger UEFA disciplinary actions, including automatic point deductions, income loss, and potential disqualification. This could also impact future World Cup and European Championship qualifications.

Beyond financial implications and potential sporting penalties, a boycott could set a damaging precedent for all Irish national teams. The FAI has also initiated its own motion with UEFA, calling for Israel's suspension from European competitions, acknowledging the strong feelings among its members regarding the conflict.
