Chicago-Whitecaps Game Postponed by Wildfire Smoke

Wildfire smoke drifting from Canada forced the Major League Soccer match between the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field to be postponed. Officials had expected a crowd of 40,000, but the game will be rescheduled for Oct. 6. The thick, pungent haze lowered visibility across the Great Lakes to parts of the East Coast, prompting health warnings that outdoor breathing could be dangerous. The National Weather Service said a high‑pressure system trapped the smoke close to the surface, making conditions unhealthy to hazardous.

Trinity Rodman, a member of the U.S. women’s national team, noted the difficulty of playing under such air quality during the NWSL clash between Washington Spirit and Gotham FC at Citi Field. “Air quality was rough,” she said, “not to make excuses, but the repeated hydration breaks every 15 minutes felt unnecessary.” The rematch drew a record crowd of more than 42,000 for a women’s event in New York City, highlighting the challenge of balancing safety with fan experience. Local officials urged residents to stay indoors or wear masks, while the league announced the postponement and set a new date to ensure player and spectator safety.
