Barcelona has completed the signing of 16-year-old England youth international Ajay Tavares from Championship side Norwich City. The talented teenager flew to Catalonia over the weekend, underwent medical examinations on Monday, and will initially join Barcelona's under-19 side after bureaucratic issues delayed the January transfer.

Tavares' Portuguese passport proved crucial in facilitating his early move to Spain, as British nationals typically cannot join Spanish clubs until turning 18. Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper expressed pride in the transfer, noting the academy's contribution to the player's development. The teenager has represented England at U15, U16, and U17 levels.

The midfielder made one first-team appearance for Norwich in a preseason friendly but will now join La Masia, Barcelona's famed academy. Tavares becomes the second England youth international to join the Catalan club's academy in the last decade, following Louie Barry in 2019. Barcelona overcame bureaucratic hurdles to secure the promising teenager's services.

Norwich was unable to offer Tavares a professional contract until he turns 17 in December, likely influencing his decision to move abroad. The transfer represents another success story for Norwich's academy system, which continues to develop talent for top European clubs. Barcelona secured the teenager's services despite competition from other interested parties.
