Barcelona's academy graduates are powering the club's Champions League campaign, with La Masia producing five starters in their record-breaking 7-2 win over Newcastle. The team's average age of 25 years and 18 days marked their youngest-ever knockout lineup, featuring teenagers like Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi. This achievement has made Barcelona the club with the most teenage starts in Champions League knockout history, surpassing Ajax.

A CIES Football Observatory study valued Barcelona's academy graduates at nearly three times that of any other club globally. Xavi Garcia Pimienta, a 51-year-old former Barcelona player and coach, attributes this success to the club's unique philosophy established by Johan Cruyff in 1988. "There is a before and after Cruyff," he explains, noting that the same playing style is taught from youth levels through to the first team.

The club's talent identification prioritizes intelligence over physicality, often selecting players overlooked by other clubs. Garcia Pimienta cites examples like Fermin Lopez and Pedri, who succeeded despite not being physically dominant in their youth. "Barça is based on footballing talent, on thinking, on being intelligent," he says, emphasizing that this approach has created a "feeling of belonging" that makes the club special.
