Franco Baresi, the legendary former AC Milan and Italy defender, has died at the age of 66. Widely regarded as one of football's greatest centre-backs, Baresi dedicated his entire career to AC Milan, captaining the club for 15 seasons and achieving World Cup glory with Italy. Milan stated, "The entire history of AC Milan is in tears." His integrity and example are said to be permanently embedded in the club's DNA, alongside his iconic No. 6 shirt.

Baresi played over 700 appearances for Milan, securing three European Cups and six Serie A titles. He earned 81 caps for Italy, notably winning the 1982 World Cup and finishing as a runner-up in 1994. He remained loyal to Milan even during their Serie B relegation in 1982 and was appointed captain at just 22. His final public appearance was at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics opening ceremony in February.

Upon his retirement in 1997, Milan retired Baresi's No. 6 jersey, a first for Italian football. He was also named an honorary president of the club in 2020. The club expressed that all associated with Milan must uphold Baresi's memory, drawing strength from him even in this time of profound loss.
