Former AC Milan and Italy defender Franco Baresi has died aged 66. The former Milan captain, widely regarded as one of the finest defenders, spent his entire 20‑season career with the club, playing 719 matches.

He lifted six Serie A titles, first Scudetto in 1978‑79, plus five more in the 1980s and early 1990s. His European success included three Champions Leagues, two Intercontinental Cups and four Super Cups, prompting Milan to retire his No 6 jersey.

Internationally, Baresi was part of Italy’s 1982 World Cup triumph and played in the 1994 final, lost on penalties to Brazil. He earned 81 caps, and the FIGC president Giovanni Malago called him an “extraordinary champion.”

AC Milan’s Paolo Maldini called Baresi the greatest player he ever played with, praising his leadership and quiet strength. He wrote, “You taught me to fight until my very last breath… the greatest player I ever had the honour of playing with.” Former Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon recalled his 1995 debut against Baresi, noting how the experience deepened his sense of class and respect. Milan’s official statements highlighted Baresi’s role as the soul of the club, with the club retiring his No 6 shirt and urging the community to live up to his legacy.
