42-Year-Old Soria Could Break World Cup Age Record

Uruguay-born Sebastián Soria, at 42, could become the oldest outfield player in World Cup history after being named in Qatar's preliminary squad. If Soria plays in the tournament, he will break Roger Milla's record set in 1994. The veteran forward was not selected for Qatar's 2022 World Cup team but has been recalled for this year's tournament where Qatar faces Canada, Switzerland, and Bosnia-Herzegovina in Group A.

Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary remains the oldest World Cup player at 45 years old from the 2018 tournament. Soria's international career appeared over in 2017 before his surprise comeback last October when he came on as a substitute in Qatar's decisive World Cup qualifying match against the United Arab Emirates. The striker moved to Qatar in 2004 and made his national team debut in 2007.

Qatar begins their World Cup campaign on June 13 against Switzerland in San Francisco before facing Canada in Vancouver and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Soria expressed pride in representing Qatar again after being called up. The 42-year-old's selection raises questions about the balance between experience and youth as teams prepare for the expanded 48-team tournament across three host nations.
