Steve Yzerman abruptly stepped down as Detroit Red Wings general manager after 7 seasons, the team announced Wednesday. Yzerman will transition to senior advisor to governor and CEO Chris Ilitch while the organization searches for a new head of hockey operations.

A Hall of Fame center with 692 goals, 1,755 points, and three Stanley Cups as a player, Yzerman returned to Detroit in 2019 to restore the franchise's championship pedigree. His "Yzerplan" failed to produce a single playoff berth, and the team struggled to develop top prospects into stars.

Tensions escalated this offseason when captain Dylan Larkin publicly requested a trade, with issues dating back to 2023 contract negotiations. Yzerman had stated his job was to act in the team's best interest but stepped down just weeks later. Chris Ilitch acknowledged the organization isn't meeting expectations and will lead the search for new leadership.

Internal candidates include Hall of Fame defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom (VP of hockey operations), assistant GMs Shawn Horcoff and Kris Draper. Yzerman will facilitate day-to-day operations and serve on the search committee to ensure a seamless transition.
