The PWHL's Seattle Torrent named Christine Bumstead as their second head coach in franchise history on Thursday. Bumstead previously served as assistant coach under Steve O'Rourke, who was dismissed in May after the team finished last in the league during their inaugural season.

Bumstead expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, stating she was inspired by the PWHL's mission long before joining the league. The Torrent's coaching change comes as the PWHL prepares for the 2026-27 season with at least four female head coaches, including Ottawa's Carla MacLeod and Montreal's Kori Cheverie, who made history in the first Walter Cup Final featuring two women coaches.

Before joining Seattle, Bumstead spent four seasons as an assistant coach for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's team. The Winnipeg native also coached player development with the WHL's Saskatoon Blades, becoming the organization's first female coach in 2023. Kim Weiss is expected to become Las Vegas's first head coach.

The Torrent's decision signals a commitment to growth after their disappointing first season. Bumstead's experience and historic trailblazing could provide the foundation needed for Seattle to compete in the league's second year.
