Manon Rheaume, the Canadian Olympic goaltender who broke barriers as the first woman to appear in an exhibition game across North America's four major men's sports, has been hired as general manager of the PWHL's Detroit expansion team. The league announced the move Friday, marking a significant step in the professional women's hockey landscape.

Rheaume brings four years of experience from the Los Angeles Kings' hockey operations department to her new role. This appointment represents a homecoming for the 54-year-old, who spent 11 years in player development with Detroit's Little Caesars girls' hockey program. Her deep ties to the Motor City provide valuable local connections as the franchise builds toward its inaugural season.

Detroit joins Las Vegas and Hamilton, Ontario as recent PWHL expansion markets, with the league targeting a 12-team configuration for next season. Seven of the nine current general managers are women, reflecting the league's commitment to female leadership. Rheaume's immediate priorities include overseeing the expansion free agent signing period beginning May 28 and preparing for the June 17 draft in Detroit.

Rheaume's groundbreaking playing career includes a silver medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympics and gold medals at the 1992 and 1994 World Championships. She made history with preseason appearances for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992 and 1993, allowing two goals on nine shots against the St. Louis Blues in her first men's professional action.
