Peter DeBoer accepted the New York Islanders’ head‑coaching vacancy with only four games left in the 2025‑26 season, signing a four‑game deal that runs through the current year plus three additional seasons. General manager Mathieu Darche likened the hire to “grabbing the No. 1 free agent,” praising DeBoer’s résumé that includes 1,261 games and a .585 points percentage, fourth among active coaches.

DeBoer’s decision came after a brief conversation with Darche following the Islanders’ 4‑3 loss to Carolina, which dropped the club out of a playoff seed. He dismissed other potential openings in Los Angeles and Toronto, saying the vision outlined by Darche and the chance to work with familiar staff—assistant Bob Boughner and video coach Matt De Mado—sealed the deal for him.

With the Islanders now a point behind both Philadelphia and Ottawa for the Metro Division’s third spot and the final wild‑card, DeBoer will debut on April 9 against Toronto. Players like Mathew Barzal expressed shock at Patrick Roy’s dismissal, while rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer, tied for second among rookies with 58 points, offers a tangible piece of the future Darche sold to the roster.
