The NHL officially announced the Buffalo Sabres will host the 2026 NHL draft at KeyBank Center on June 26-27. Commissioner Gary Bettman and owner Terry Pegula confirmed the selection, marking the league's return to a city deeply rooted in hockey culture. Buffalo previously hosted the event in 2016, and this decision continues the league's decentralized draft format implemented last year.

Bettman praised Buffalo's passionate fanbase and rich hockey tradition, noting the region's ability to support major events. The area already hosts the NHL scouting combine and has welcomed the World Juniors. Pegula emphasized the city's border proximity to Canada, calling it 'Canada south' to highlight easy access for international fans and prospects.

While team personnel will again select players from their home cities, the league plans to bring 90-100 top prospects to Western New York. Penn State's Gavin McKenna is currently projected as the potential No. 1 overall pick. The draft will utilize up to 1,800 hotel rooms and continue the league's effort to engage grassroots hockey markets.
