Malkin Future with Penguins Uncertain

Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas expressed strong interest in bringing back star center Evgeni Malkin for another season. The 39-year-old Malkin, who just completed his 20th season with Pittsburgh, posted 61 points in 56 games this season with a 1.09 points per game average - his highest mark in six years and helped Pittsburgh return to the playoffs.

Malkin is an unrestricted free agent after playing out a four-year contract worth $6.1 million annually. Despite his desire to play one more NHL season, Malkin acknowledged uncertainty about whether it would be with Pittsburgh. Dubas confirmed ongoing discussions with Malkin and his agent J.P. Barry, stating the veteran wouldn't hinder younger players' development.

The potential return of Malkin continues the era of hockey's longest-tenured trio, alongside Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang. The trio surpassed the New York Yankees' record for longest-tenured teammates in North American sports three years ago. Dubas recognized the sentimental value while also emphasizing the need to make decisions in the Penguins' long-term interest.
