Islanders Acquire Schenn for Playoff Push

The New York Islanders have acquired St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn in a significant trade ahead of the NHL trade deadline. The deal sends veteran forward Jonathan Drouin, a 2026 first-round pick, a third-round pick, and Swedish goalie prospect Marcus Gidlof to St. Louis. The first-round pick came from the Colorado Avalanche in last season's Brock Nelson trade.

Schenn, 34, brings playoff experience and leadership to the Islanders' lineup. The center has recorded 12 goals and 16 assists in 61 games this season for the Blues. He's signed through the 2027-28 season with a $6.5 million cap hit, providing long-term stability for New York. Schenn waived his 15-team no-trade clause to join the Islanders, despite speculation about interest in moving to the Colorado Avalanche.

This trade represents two franchises heading in opposite directions. The Blues, sellers in their retooling phase, nearly dealt star defenseman Colton Parayko to the Buffalo Sabres before he rejected the trade. Meanwhile, the Islanders sit third in the Metro Division with 75 points in 63 games, holding just a three-point lead over the Columbus Blue Jackets for a playoff spot. Schenn's versatility to play center or wing adds depth to New York's lineup.
