Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea has put contract drama behind him, reaffirming his commitment to stay with the team long-term. After requesting a trade and holding in during training camp, Vea signed a one-year extension worth $30 million in guaranteed money for 2027, bringing his total earnings to $48 million over the next two years. "They say home is where the heart is. I feel like my heart is in Tampa," Vea said. "I always wanted to be a Buc, and I wanted to be a Buc for life." Vea, who was originally set to earn $18 million in 2026, fell below market value compared to peers like Chris Jones, Jeffery Simmons, and Jalen Carter.

Despite the dispute, Bucs general manager Jason Licht confirmed the team had no intention of trading him. Vea missed the first preseason game due to a back injury sustained during conditioning drills but is expected to be ready for Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals. "It's just all part of the business," Vea said. "I got drafted here. I made it my home." The Buccaneers are focused on getting Vea acclimated for the regular season while managing his injury status.
