UFL's Bold Rule Changes: 4-Point Field Goals and Punt Ban

The United Football League is implementing dramatic rule changes for its 2026 season to boost scoring and excitement. The league will award four points for field goals of at least 60 yards and ban most punts inside the opponent's 50-yard line, according to a series of revisions announced Tuesday.

These changes were largely driven by Mike Repole, who joined the UFL last summer as an investor with full authority over business operations. The four-point field goal rule aims to encourage teams to attempt longer kicks once they cross midfield, while the punt restriction forces more aggressive fourth-down decisions. There's one exception: punts inside the 50 are allowed after the two-minute warning in either half.

The NFL has seen an explosion of 60-yard field goal attempts in recent seasons, with teams converting 16 of 37 such attempts over the past two years. Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey, an alumnus of spring football, has led the league with five conversions from that distance. The UFL is also banning the tush push short-yardage play, adjusting points after touchdown options, creating more space for kickoff returns, and adopting the NCAA's one-foot-in-bounds rule for completed catches. UFL players reported to training camp in Arlington, Texas, over the weekend, with the 10-week season beginning March 27.
