NFL Considers 4‑Point Field Goal

Should the NFL adopt the UFL’s 4‑point field‑goal rule? While no formal proposal exists, players and Hall‑of‑Famers show mixed interest.

The UFL’s 2026 season saw 8‑for‑14 kicks from 60+ yards, a jump from zero in 2025. The NFL logged 22 attempts and 12 makes (55%) last season, nearly matching the previous three years’ totals.

Jacksonville head coach Liam Coen praised the idea: “Up the ante a little bit.” Kicker Cam Little—who set an NFL record with a 68‑yarder—added, “If we could keep some tradition, that’s what makes the NFL cool.” Detroit’s Jake Bates and Washington’s Jake Moody welcomed the extra incentive, while Brandon Aubrey warned it could alter play‑calling.

Historically, field goals counted five points in 1876, four in 1904, and three in 1909. Veteran Adam Vinatieri supports a change: “It would make kickers even more valuable.” Yet Jan Stenerud argues it distorts the game’s reward for moving the ball.
