DETROIT — Veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has officially stepped away from the Detroit Lions and was placed on the reserve/retired list ahead of Sunday's training camp practice.

Head coach Dan Campbell believes this retirement may be permanent, noting that Bridgewater had previously retired after the 2023 season before returning to the team in 2024. "I think he can only truly answer that, but I feel like this is where it's at for sure right now," Campbell said.

Bridgewater, 33, signed with the Lions in March as an unrestricted free agent to serve as backup to Jared Goff. He appeared in four games with the Buccaneers last season, completing 8 of 15 passes for 62 yards. Over his nine-year career, the 2014 first-round pick has completed 1,380 of 2,082 passes for 15,182 yards and 75 touchdowns.

Campbell praised Bridgewater's character, calling him an "unbelievable human being" and noting his leadership in the locker room. "He meant a lot. He's gonna be missed."

Undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer will continue as the team's QB2 behind Goff, with Detroit expected to sign another veteran quarterback for depth.
