The Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with veteran inside linebacker Bobby Okereke, ESPN confirmed on Saturday. Okereke's arrival introduces an open-ended starting competition opposite fellow free agent addition Devin Lloyd. Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus battled throughout training camp without a clear winner emerging. Given Okereke's experience as a starting middle linebacker, he could leap both players in the pecking order ahead of Week 1.

Okereke spent the past three seasons with the New York Giants, where he became a starting middle linebacker. Prior to that, the Stanford alum played four years in Indianapolis as a 2019 third-round pick of the Colts. In his seven-year NFL career, he has accumulated 805 total tackles, 34 for loss, 7.5 sacks, 36 pass breakups, seven interceptions, and 11 forced fumbles. Last season, Okereke started all 17 games for New York, recording 143 tackles, a sack, six pass breakups, and two interceptions.

The 30-year-old linebacker was out of football the entire offseason before signing with Carolina. His addition provides depth and starting experience to a linebacker corps looking to solidify the defense heading into the regular season.
