NFL Revives Leadership Accelerator With Expanded Focus

The NFL is reviving its front office and coaching accelerator program after a one-year pause, with expanded eligibility for non-minority participants. According to an internal memo obtained by ESPN, the program will run from May 18-20 during league meetings and shift focus toward senior-level candidates aligned with head coach and general manager readiness.

Originally launched in 2022 to increase diversity in leadership roles, the accelerator was paused in 2025 to be "reimagined." The new version aims to advance talent from underrepresented groups while remaining open to qualified candidates of all backgrounds. This change comes amid criticism following a hiring cycle where only one minority candidate, Robert Saleh, was hired among 10 openings.

Currently, the league has five non-white head coaches: DeMeco Ryans, Todd Bowles, Aaron Glenn, Dave Canales, and Saleh. Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged during Super Bowl week that the NFL needs to become more diverse "across every platform, including coaching," and admitted the league still has "work to do." The accelerator's return signals the NFL's continued commitment to addressing diversity challenges in leadership positions.
