NFL Clears Chiefs DBs Coach Merritt After Investigation

The NFL has closed its investigation into Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt, determining there was insufficient evidence to violate the personal conduct policy. League sources confirmed no disciplinary action will be taken against Merritt, who faced scrutiny following criminal charges earlier this year.

The misdemeanor domestic battery charge against Merritt was dismissed last month by the District Court of Johnson County, Kansas. He was arrested in April on allegations of causing bodily harm to his daughter, charges for which he maintained his innocence through a not guilty plea.

Merritt brings extensive NFL experience to his coaching role, having played linebacker professionally before transitioning to one of the league's top defensive backs instructors. His coaching career spans multiple championship runs, including five Super Bowl victories with the Chiefs and Giants organizations combined.

The decision allows Merritt to continue his coaching duties uninterrupted heading into the 2026 season, preserving continuity for Kansas City's secondary that ranked among the league's best in recent years.
