Drew Dalman Retirement Shocks Bears After NFC North Title

Chicago Bears center Drew Dalman has announced his retirement from the NFL at age 27, ending a five-year career that included a standout season in 2024. The former fourth-round pick from Stanford spent his first four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons before signing a three-year, $42 million contract with Chicago during the 2025 offseason.

Dalman was a key piece of the Bears' offensive line that helped transform quarterback Caleb Williams' sophomore season. After Williams was sacked a league-high 68 times as a rookie in 2024, the Bears' investment in their interior line paid immediate dividends. Dalman started all 17 games and ranked eighth among interior offensive linemen in pass block win-rate, helping Chicago's line lead the NFL in pass protection efficiency.

The timing of Dalman's retirement creates significant challenges for the Bears as they enter free agency. His departure will save Chicago approximately $10 million against the salary cap, providing much-needed flexibility as the team works to comply with league limits. However, the Bears now face the urgent task of finding a new starting center and left tackle, with Ozzy Trapilo sidelined for most of the 2026 season due to a knee injury.
