Linebacker Dre Greenlaw is returning to the San Francisco 49ers on a one-year contract worth $7.5 million, according to sources. Greenlaw spent his first five seasons with the 49ers before signing a three-year, $31.5 million deal with the Denver Broncos last year. Denver released the 28-year-old earlier this week after a disappointing season.

Greenlaw's lone season in Denver was marred by injuries and controversy. He missed the offseason program and the first six games due to thigh injuries, limiting his impact on the field. In eight games, he recorded 43 tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble. Greenlaw also faced a one-game suspension for verbally threatening referee Brad Allen after a game against the Giants.

The Broncos had signed Greenlaw hoping he would add physicality to their defense, which struggled against explosive runs in 2024. Now, Greenlaw rejoins the 49ers, where he had 498 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and four interceptions over his career. His return comes as San Francisco continues to reshape its roster for the upcoming season.
