San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been suspended for one game without pay for unsportsmanlike conduct in Sunday's 32-29 win over the Seattle Seahawks. With 6:30 left in the first half, Greenlaw hit Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold late and out of bounds, then was involved in a skirmish with Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV, head-butting Jones, who was not wearing a helmet.

The league said Greenlaw violated Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to "any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship." Barring a successful appeal, Greenlaw will miss the Oct. 19 game against the Washington Commanders and would be eligible to return to the active roster on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Sources told ESPN that Greenlaw is appealing the suspension.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he had not yet spoken to Greenlaw about the incident but expected that conversation on Monday. "We'll clean that stuff up. He knows he's got to be smarter," Shanahan said. Linebacker Fred Warner said he tried to reach the sideline quickly but was too far away to pull Greenlaw from the fray. Rookie Jaden Dugger replaced Greenlaw on the weakside, finishing with nine tackles and a sack.

This is Greenlaw's second one-game suspension in as many years. He was suspended while with the Denver Broncos last season for unsportsmanlike conduct, and Sunday's ejection was his third of his career. Last week, he was also fined $11,941 by the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct during a game against Denver.
