Washington Commanders defensive lineman Jer'Zhan Newton underwent surgery Wednesday to repair a torn pectoral muscle, a source confirmed. Newton is expected to miss a significant period of time. The 2024 second-round pick was injured during Washington's 20-7 preseason-opening win over the Miami Dolphins on Friday, leaving in the second quarter after his left arm appeared to bend awkwardly while taking on a double team.

Newton was expected to contribute to Washington's defensive line rotation, backing up starters Daron Payne and Javon Kinlaw. In his first two seasons, he played in 33 games with 13 starts, recording seven career sacks including five last season.

The injury adds to Washington's growing injury concerns. Starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil is also out indefinitely with a torn triceps, while linebackers Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson have not practiced this week. Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota is expected to return for the Sept. 13 season opener despite a sprained MCL.
