The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and defensive tackle Vita Vea have agreed to a one-year contract extension, ending his hold-in that began prior to training camp. The deal adds $6 million to Vea's existing $18 million salary for 2026, bringing his total compensation to $24 million this year, plus another $24 million in 2027. Vea is effectively guaranteed all $48 million over the next two seasons, according to sources. The 31-year-old Pro Bowler had requested a trade last month due to having no guaranteed money on his existing deal. His new contract ties him with Carolina's Derrick Brown for 11th among interior defensive tackles at $24 million per year. "Vita is exactly the type of player and person we want to build around in Tampa Bay," said general manager Jason Licht. Vea participated in the team's conditioning test on July 28 but suffered a back injury and has missed all training camp practices. The extension was finalized Tuesday night after negotiations heated up. Vea contributed 4.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hits last year, with his 65.6% pass rush rate versus double teams ranking ninth in the league.

Vea's absence from practice had reached a critical point heading into the second preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Buccaneers are planning to limit their starters, including quarterback Baker Mayfield, to 8-15 snaps in that contest. Despite not participating in on-field drills, Vea has been present for classroom instruction and has assisted teammates with drills. The team remains committed to building around their defensive anchor, with Licht emphasizing the importance of retaining core foundational players who set the standard for what it means to be a Buccaneer.

The extension represents a significant investment in Vea's leadership and performance. His ability to draw double teams and create opportunities for his teammates has been instrumental to the Bucs' defensive success. With his contract situation now resolved, Vea can focus on returning to full health and contributing to the team's championship aspirations.
