Chiefs Keep Receiver Room Internal, Rely on Young Trio

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has sworn off big receiver moves for this offseason, betting instead on a trio of young weapons. Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Tyquan Thornton will return to a system that has been reshaped by returning offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and new receivers coach Chad O'Shea. Reid wants the trio to explode before Mahomes fully regains his knee.

Rice emerged from a 30‑day jail stint that followed a probation violation tied to a 2024 Dallas highway crash. He also had right‑knee surgery to remove debris that had inflamed his joint. With the jail release, Rice will resume rehab under Chiefs staff while aiming to eclipse his rookie 938‑yard season and become Mahomes’ primary target.

Worthy’s offseason grind paid off at minicamp, where he logged the fastest 40‑yard time and improved route precision. Last season he finished 153rd in the league’s receiver score after a torn labrum sidelined him early. O'Shea praised his energy, noting that Worthy now catches under pressure and fits Mahomes’ playbook better.

Reid’s confidence stems from a cohesive coaching staff and a clear offensive identity. Bieniemy’s return has re‑energised play‑calling, while O'Shea’s feedback sharpens the receivers’ execution. With no trade or free‑agent acquisition, the Chiefs will rely on internal development to keep Mahomes supplied with a reliable target group before the season opens.
